Do You Know What To Do When A Dental Emergency Strikes?

Dental emergencies never happen at a “convenient” time. They typically happen late at night or on the weekends when most dentists are unavailable.

Let’s face it…living with extreme tooth or jaw pain is unbearable. And, if your dentures are loose or broken, they need to be repaired immediately to avoid discomfort and embarrassment.

What to Do If You Crack a Tooth

It’s 11pm on a Saturday night and you are having a snack of fresh cherries. You take your next bite and hit a pit, hearing an ominous cracking noise. Then comes the pain – you just cracked a tooth. Do you know what to do next? Most dentist offices keep traditional business hours. Unfortunately most tooth emergencies do not take this fact into consideration.

Step#1

Your first step when you realize you are having a dental emergency is to stay calm. Panicking will not do you any good, and can even make the pain worse. Take a deep breath and start thinking about your next step.

Step #2

Next, you should clean your mouth thoroughly. This is especially important because if you have an open wound in your mouth, bacteria can easily enter your bloodstream, causing infection. At a minimum, you should rinse your mouth with water, or better yet, antibacterial mouthwash. If you can manage it, brushing and flossing around the affected tooth can also help. If you have knocked a tooth out, be careful that you do not remove any tissue and keep the tooth in a safe and hygienic container. Your dentist may be able to re-implant it.

Step #3

Once your mouth is clean, you can start working on pain relief. A cold compress can not only help with the pain, it will help prevent or treat any swelling that may be occurring. Over the counter pain medications may be able to help as well.

Step #4

Now that you have things under control, it is time to seek help. If you think your injury is stable, you can wait until your regular dentist is open and try to get an urgent care appointment. If your injury is more serious, check to see if there are any Suffolk County dental emergency clinics in your area. They may cost a little more, but these clinics are open 24 hours and will be able to help you immediately. If your injury is very severe, consider going to your local emergency room, especially if there is any chance that your jaw is injured or broken.

The key to successfully managing a dental emergency is being prepared for it. When you know what you need to do, you can take each step calmly, one by one, without the risk of worsening your injury until you can get the help you need.
