Some Of The Treatments That May Be Provided Following A Dental Emergency
When you come to our office for treatment of your dental emergency, there are many treatments that we may use depending on the type of emergency that you are experiencing.
Not every emergency will be handled in the same way, however these are some of the typical treatments that you may receive.
If you break, chip, or fracture a tooth, it is important that you come to our office as soon as possible, preferably within one hour of the occurrence of the emergency. The treatment that you will receive will depend on how much damage has occurred.
We may need to repair the damage with a filling, or in the case of front teeth we may use a process called bonding. Bonding is a relatively painless procedure during which we will apply an adhesive to your tooth, followed by the bonding agent. The bonding agent is then reshaped to resemble your tooth, and then hardened with an ultraviolet light.
A broken tooth may require that we apply a dental cap or crown. This will involve grinding away part of the remaining tooth, and then attaching a crown to it that has been designed to protect the tooth and improve its appearance.
Bridges are used to close the gap left behind by missing teeth. They are mounted to the teeth on either side of the gap and are permanently attached. Damaged tooth roots can be replaced with implants. These can be used to attach crowns to as well. Implants are metal poles that have been imbedded into the bone socket.
Teeth that have been knocked out can usually be replanted in the bone socket with good prognosis within one hour of the time of the injury. Beyond one hour and the likelihood of saving the tooth becomes much smaller. The most important thing is to avoid touching the root of the tooth to keep from damaging cells that are vital for replanting it, and to keep the tooth moist by putting it into milk or a saline solution.
These are just a few of the more common treatments that our patients receive following a dental emergency. Please call us as soon as possible following the occurrence of a dental emergency so that we can evaluate your situation. In many cases, your best chances of saving your tooth and minimizing the amount of intervention that we will have to do is to seek medical attention as soon as possible following the emergency.
